Fair money for fair farming
What's going on?
Every day, 800 small farms get shut down in Europe.
Current policies mean that these farms are not supported to thrive, food is unhealthy and expensive and our food system damages the environment. The current EU funds for agriculture (a.k.a Common Agricultural Policy - CAP), is responsible for these issues, as it was heavily influenced by the pesticides lobby and big agricultural corporations.
It’s time to campaign for a new Agricultural Policy.
Why this is wrong?
Every farmer in Europe deserves a fair chance, not only those backed by powerful lobbies.
We want a Common Agriculture Policy that is actually common, and gives support to those who need it most. That’s how we fight food insecurity, and how we produce quality, sustainable food that everyone in Europe has equal access to.
Make a new and improved Common Agricultural Policy that is socially just.
Small, local farms deserve to have equal access to EU funds, so they can effectively participate in our fight for food security, sustainable agriculture and equal access.
Petition text
The Common Agriculture Policy (CAP) currently takes up almost ⅓ of the EU’s budget. With the lives of Europeans being affected by climate change, biodiversity loss, food poverty and food insecurity, we cannot afford to have a CAP that doesn’t make our groceries cheaper or protect our health or environment. Social justice at the forefront of every policy is not a fantasy, but a necessity for the EU.
Small and ecological farms play a crucial role in producing healthy, affordable food, protecting our environment and helping more people access green spaces. Yet in just 15 years, more than five million farms have vanished in the EU. That’s more than 800 farms closing every single day! Most of these were small family farms that could have survived IF CAP funding had been accessible to them.
The European Commission recently proposed a new CAP. But it fails to fully address the damage caused by CAP’s favouritism of large landowners and industrial farms.
We demand:
A restructuring and refinancing of CAP that supports small farmers can benefit from EU subsidies, without needing a powerful lobby behind them. CAP needs to be for the many, not for the few.
Better support for farmers transitioning to more ecological farming practices or opening up their farms to social projects.
