No CO2 cuts? No EU subsidies!

The new IPCC special report on climate change leaves us with good and bad news.

The good news is that climate science confirms that it's still possible to keep global warming within 1.5c. The bad news is that the EU's climate targets are completely inadequate if we aim to succeed at it.

"Last summer was a wake-up call for us all. In Europe we were witnessing destructive wildfires and extreme heat waves accompanied by drought that had a devastating impact on farmers as well as ordinary people. This will become even more common if we don't act now," says Zuzana Pavelková, Co-Spokesperson of FYEG.

"The European commission must prove that it is serious about the Paris climate targets and adopt an ambitious decarbonisation strategy," Pavelková continues.

According to the new IPCC report, by 2050 EU should not only be carbon neutral, but carbon negative. This means that the EU should emit less greenhouse gases than what our environment can naturally absorb.

In the light of this knowledge it is unacceptable that the European Commission keep  subsidizing projects that are increasing carbon emissions in the midst of the climate crisis.

"In 2017 there were several EU member states with increasing carbon emissions. If EU funding can be tied to the rule of law, as Commission has proposed, then why not to link it to its member states decreasing their emissions as well. No CO2 cuts? No EU subsidies", says Katri Ylinen, Co-Spokesperson of FYEG.

While ending any fossil fuel subsidies, the next EU budget plan should focus on a fair transition towards a 100% renewable energy system by 2030 and promote transition in the industry, agriculture and transports sectors.

FYEG calls upon the European leaders to enshrine fight against climate change among the key values of the Union and to stop funding those who sabotage our progress towards a sustainable future. No single euro from taxpayers money should benefit a dirty industry!
