Call for Members - Democracy & Inclusion Working Group

The Democracy & Inclusion Working Group is a Europe-wide platform where we listen, share and take action! It is the place where we exchange knowledge about inspiring movements and how we can be a part of it. We work alongside FYEG’s Executive Committee and Office to promote the political platform of FYEG and to explore the possibilities of doing online campaigns, webinars, publications, taking part in conferences or  writing policy papers.

In the last years, the world has seen a rise in authoritarian leadership. In Europe too, we've seen a rise in oppressive leadership. Democracy and the rule of law is being exploited by governments, freedom of media undermined, and democratic procedures being interrupted by those abusing their position of power. Governments are endangering citizens who want to voice their frustrations at injustice by blocking citizen’s right to demonstrate through threat of force against theirs and their loved ones’ safety. Too often, the right to protest is squashed by the state through police brutality and unjust detention. This forces many protesters into dangerous and vulnerable situations, even losing their lives at the hands of the State.

These issues especially reflect on marginalised groups whose freedom of expression is often blocked by oppressing governments. Recognising the violence inflicted on women*, trans people, genderqueer, BIPoC and racialised communities, migrants, people from low socioeconomic backgrounds, and LGBTQIA+ people and believing that diversity is substantial for healthy democracies and thriving communities we would like to empower young greens to further explore these issues and opportunities. Currently in Europe’s political institutions all of these groups are overwhelmingly underrepresented and the system often excludes people from participating in the decision making even in the cases when said decisions affect them the most.

If we want a democracy that works for all we need to ensure the participation of the people in decision making. In an attempt to do so, Europe’s institutions are working on the Conference on the Future of Europe which is a real opportunity to initiate a conversation with citizens and to explore innovative consultation methods. At the same time, these volatile times may lead to the Conference on the Future of Europe being only a charade with no real follow-up. Now is the crucial time for young Greens to unite their voices and demand for more just and inclusive democratic processes!

Why join?

Working groups are a great opportunity to help steer FYEG’s political direction, learn more about the organisation itself and connect with young greens across Europe. You will develop not only your knowledge of democracy, but also organisational and practical skills.

This year the Democracy & Inclusion Working Group will be divided in 3 subgroups. These are: a group that focuses on general discussions and topics, a group that will work on democracy and inclusion proposals within FYEG which will be discussed at the General Assembly 2022, and an organisational group that will host an event on the Conference of the Future of Europe.

Aims of the Democracy & Inclusion Working Group:

  • create professional documents on internally selected topics

  • provide the groundwork for the formulation of political positions

  • create a space for a debate on issues relating to the current status and the future of democracy among  young activists on the European level

  • Initiate a critical assesment on the challenges of inclusion and discrimination faced by green youth organisations in Europe and engaging in activities, research and projects aimed at solving them;

  • communicate FYEG’s positions internally and externally in consultation with the FYEG Executive Committee and Office

  • Develop a publication, a blog series or articles with the Ecosprinter

  • Hold a webinar (or more!) on specific topics to share the work of the Working Group with FYEG members and beyond.

  • Follow the plans for the Conference on the Future of Europe and develop recommendations to ensure inclusion of all (and especially marginalised and racialised) groups in its assemblies. Also, there will be room to organize an event on the Conference on the Future of Europe.
