The Young Greens of Turkey and Federation of Young European Greens (FYEG) are deeply concerned about the law proposal on “Conservation of Nature and Biodiversity” which will be discussed in the Parliament of Turkey. This law will contribute to destroying our ecology, it will not protect it.
The law is focused on how to "use” nature instead of conserving it. If the Parliament approves this draft bill, it would mean that the Nature Conservation Areas will be under the risk of being “utilised” for “public interest”, namely investments into industrial development. The protected areas will be open to investments in the sectors like energy, mining, housing and industry.
The Young Greens of Turkey, demands:"We, as young greens want to highlight that this decision can’t be left to neoliberal spirited politicians. This law will only serve investors’ interests and it will cause a big damage to nature."
Jakob Schwarz, Co-Spokesperson of FYEG points out: "The current state of the draft bill is against the international conventions Turkey is part of, and also against the Constitution of Turkey."
FYEG and the Young Greens of Turkey urge the Members of the Parliament in Turkey to vote against this draft bill. Turkey needs a new law prepared through a participatory process which includes environment and ecology movements, related trade unions, scientists, political parties, local people, students and youth. The notion of “superior public interest” should be redefined by overseeing the rights of all living and future generations. This law should aim for “sustainable life” not “sustainable use”.
