image from the actionToday is the Global Day of Action concerning the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. It seems that even 20 years after the first Earth Summit in 1992, the Leaders of the World still do not understand that we do not have any time to waste. Biodiversity loss and accumulation of GHG require us to act now. Every minute, hundreds of species get extinct. Indigenous people lose their natural living space, and desertification is reinforced. Furthermore, the increasingly warm climate is already turning millions of people into climate refugees.

Michael Bloss, Member of the Board of the Federation of Young European Greens explains “In this times of a huge environmental crisis, World Leaders propose a greenwashed economy. They say it is a Green Economy, bur it is towards creating more money and exploiting the people and the planet and does not prioritise the protection of the environment and the people”.

For Rio+20, world leaders had the opportunity to react to the multiple crises of nowadays with some substantive change, however they did not and some of them are not even present at the summit. Therefore, we demand a real green economy which is based on the principles of a perfect circle economy. We need an immediate stop of the proliferation of greenhouse gas emissions. We need an end to the deforestation and some serious projects to reduce climate emissions. We are already too late, if we do not act now, it is going to be a disaster which seriously endangers our future.
