The Federation of Young European Greens held its General Assembly in Mechelen, Belgium and elected two new Spokespersons, Ingrid Nyman from Sweden and Michael Bloss from Germany. FYEG as well elected a new Secretary General: Maria “Maggie” Dokupilova, 27 from Slovakia will be coordinating our political work in Brussels. Silvio Heinze, 26 from Austria was elected as treasurer. The new members of the Executive Committee are Philippe Schockweiler, 27 from Luxembourg, Clarisse Heusquin, 25 from France, Krassina Demireva 26 from Bulgaria, Kristian Normand, 25 from Norway and Dragana Drndarevska, 26 from Macedonia.

Last month, thanks largely to Members of the European People's Party in the European Parliament, the Parliament rejected a proposal by the European Commission who wanted to shorten supply of emission certificates to EU industry.
Thanks to these parliamentarians the industries keep blowing Carbon Dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere, and today according to measurements at the Mauna Loa Observatory, the CO2 concentration reached a symbolic red line, 400 parts per million.

The European Citizens' Initiative "Water is a human right" - huge step to the success, but still more action needed |

 The Federation of Young European Greens (FYEG) is happy to announce that the European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) "Water is a human right" is on its way to become the first successful ECI in the European history after fulfilling the requirement of 1 million collected signatures from at least 7 EU countries. The ECI "Water is a human right" advocates for: clean, accessible and affordable water; public management of our water supply, and opposes the application of the European "internal market rules" to water services. This month the ECI reached almost 1 500 000 collected signatures and fullfilled the required minumum of signatures in 8 EU countries: Austria, Germany, Belgium, Slovakia, Slovenia, Luxembourg, Lithuania and Finland.
The deadline for collecting signatures is 1st November, 2013, but the organizers of the intiiative might submit the signatures to the Commission much earlier. Once the signatures are verified and handled to the Commission, the organizers of the ECI will have the right within 3 months to present their demands on a public hearing in the European parliaments, and receive an official answer of the Commission if a legislation on their demands will be tabled further.
The high number of signatures in times of dwindeling trust in the European Union shows that citizens want to take part and shape policies at the European level. The European Commission should take care not to deceive hope for the European Citizens Initiative as a first step towards true citizens participation.
Terry Reintke, co-spokesperson of FYEG said: "This is the first European Citizens' Initiative FYEG is officially supporting and campaigning on, and we are really happy for the current results. However the "water battle" is still not over. We should not stop collecting signatures until the final hand-over to the Commission. Now is the time more than ever to encourage European debates on water issues, and push the Commission to take actions!"
Krassina Demireva (FYEG Executive Committee) adds: "The FYEG Water campaign team is planning a new action day for the moment when the signatures will be submitted to the Commission. We need to make sure European citizens' voice really matters, and therefore encourage you to take action with us!"

Young people gathered in Vienna to discuss Internet Governance and Digital Rights. The training hosted by Austrians Young Greens and the Federation of Young European Greens (FYEG), brought together activists of several youth organisations: Young European Federalists, Youth for Exchange and Understanding and AEGEE, cooperating under the umbrella of the European Youth Forum. The Young Pirates Sweden contributed to the training as well.
Core topics of the training and the biggest concerns of the partcipants were privacy and data protection online. With every search online, every "like" on Facebook one discloses facts about their live. Data collectors record our every move. We share our location, who are our friends and what are our interests. The online public space where we, especially younger people interact, became dangerous and worrying when realizing what happens with all this data, if subjected to governmental or corporate surveillance.
Therefore the group called public attention to internet privacy and organized a street action in Vienna on 30th of April at the Museumsplatz in front of the Museumsquartier. Activists carrying posters and costumes showcasing the invasion of privacy invited everyone to inform themselves and raise awareness to the threats they face online.
"Privacy standards are on a decline and users hand out their private information unknowing of risks and consequences. New legislation introduced not by the public but by companies, whilst governments approve silently behind closed doors. We try to bring awareness to the streets. This is why we went out today!"
Maggie Dokupilova, FYEG Executive Committee Member, said.
"We need fundamental rights online. Our legislative process fell way to far behind the technical advances and we run the risk of losing ourselves in the process. The digital world can provide countless opportunities but we need to claim our right of self-determination and keep ownership of our contributions to the internet."
